As editor my job is to get video on air for the newscasts. A photographer may shoot 20 minutes of video hand it off to me and I will only have a few minutes to edit it together before it goes on air. A lot of interesting video and interviews never make it to your homes. Everyday I have to download raw national video and pick what is sensible to watch. Nothing substitutes being on scene in person. Hearing, seeing, smelling, and feeling what's around you is something we try to convey in our newscasts. Sometimes you may wonder...."why did they show that?" or "don't they have any other video to use?" Sometimes we wonder the same thing. Either we didn't have enough hours to go and grab new video or national and world news never sent new video down to us. As an editor you rely on photographers, reporters, graphics, and station feeds to bring you the best video to express a story.
We try our best to make sure that what you see reflects the situation that we are giving you information on.
A little background information on me:I grew up in rural Henry County about 50 miles outside of Toledo. My interest in TV began in the sixth grade. Our class was picked to be on the PBS program, "News 6." I saw the studio, the cameras, all the buttons and equipment and knew that television was for me. In 2001 I received my Bachelor’s Degree at BGSU. While obtaining my degree I worked for PBS and with the on-campus student station. I was involved in just about every behind the scenes production, but enjoyed shooting and editing the best. In May of 2002 I began here at 13abc as one of their Photojournalists. With my back not being made for carrying the heavy equipment 5 days a week I became the fulltime editor for now. I miss shooting and being able to get outside of the station and hope one of these days to start being a photographer again. One of my favorite things to capture is unpredictable weather habits. I love storm chasing and crazy weather. I am a rare person that enjoys snow. I don't mind bundling up in my snow suit and heading out all day for 8 hours to bring you road conditions. Well okay if it is 20 below zero,... I don't enjoy that.
